The Structure of Catalytically Active Gold on Titania
M. S. Chen and
D. W. Goodman*
The high catalytic activity of gold clusters on oxides has beenattributed to structural effects (including particle thicknessand shape and metal oxidation state), as well as to supporteffects. We have created well-ordered gold mono-layers and bilayersthat completely wet (cover) the oxide support, thus eliminatingparticle shape and direct support effects. High-resolution electronenergy loss spectroscopy and carbon monoxide adsorption confirmthat the gold atoms are bonded to titanium atoms. Kinetic measurementsfor the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide show that thegold bilayer structure is significantly more active (by morethan an order of magnitude) than the monolayer.
