Even as researchers look for desirable tree genes that could be used for genetic engineering of trees, they are already introducing genes from other species, such as bacterial genes that confer insect resistance, into trees as a way of improving their quality. Other genetic manipulations might speed flowering or decrease production of lignin, a material that must be removed during paper-making.
