Varmus to Leave NIH in December to Run Sloan-Kettering

Last week, National Institutes of Health director Harold Varmus informed President Clinton that he will resign "at the end of the year" to succeed Paul Marks as president of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Finding a permanent successor may be difficult just a year before a change of administration. But the process could be accelerated by recruiting from within NIH. Speculation focused on several possible candidates: National Cancer Institute director Richard Klausner, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci, and National Institute of Mental Health director Steven Hyman.
